I once read, “If your purpose is to grow strawberries there is not much value in spending your time, effort and energy in coaching volleyball and if your core purpose is to love as Christ loves then there is not much value in excluding others, or judging others or limiting yourself.” I’ve settled into my thinking chair remembering my purpose is to live with faith not in fear, to be authentic, to walk with integrity and be inclusive, to be thoughtful and think theologically, to see with hope, to love family and friends, to be grateful and generous and to serve with joy. (I know it’s too long for a mission statement but important enough for me to remember how much purpose matters in my daily life.) Regardless of your or my opinion of Rick Warren’s theology in his book the “Purpose Driven Life” he reminds us how important purpose matters. In introducing his book he writes: “The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambition. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God.” (The Purpose Driven Life – page 17)   Purpose orients our direction. Without purpose we simple drift to and fro, as they say, wandering aimlessly through the adventure as if we are on a journey with no destination and no reason.  Purpose prevents us from getting lost and it’s so easy to lose our way these days. Purpose orients us and for us, as people of faith, our purpose is to be the person who God created us to be. It is to experience God’s love in a profoundly personal way.

Scripture Reading: Luke 4:18-19
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of the sight to the blind, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Reflection Questions:
How would you respond if someone asked you what your purpose is?
Who did God create you to be?
What is included in the Lord’s favor?

Prayer: Holy God, living as you desire matters. Anoint me with your Spirit that I may walk in ways that point and proclaim your favor upon creature, community and creation. Amen.
