There is a coffee bar close to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital and just about every day our daughter stops by to get a nitro iced coffee before making her way into the hospital.  (Now for anyone interested a Nitro cold brew coffee is a cold brew coffee charged with nitrogen to give it a rich, creamy head.) The coffee bar is one of those places that “everyone knows your name.”   The interesting thing is that they don’t take her money.  There is no charge for her coffee.  That’s because someone paid it forward and that’s not just for her but for other medical and health professionals who patron the coffee bar. People buy coffee for strangers. They pay it forward.

In pop culture “pay it forward” is an expression for when the recipient of an act of kindness does something kind for someone else rather than simply accepting or repaying the original good deed.

Ready for this… there is actually a “Pay It Forward Day” and it this coming Tuesday April 28th

According to their website (payitforwardday.com) Pay It Forward Day is a global initiative that exists to make a difference by creating a huge ripple of kindness felt across the world. Their hope is that people pay kindness forward every day, making each day a little bit brighter. They believe that small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can literally change the world for the better.  What does it mean for us to create a ripple of goodness?

I remember reading something the the Dalai Lama said: “Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.”  The ripple effect is a gradually spreading of influence or a series of consequences caused by a single action or event.

There is much truth to the fact that everything we do has a ripple effect, every word we speak and every action has an impact on other people and this planet.  So let us continue to become epicenters of kindness or goodness.

Scripture Reading: Psalm 116:12-19
What shall I return to the Lord for all his bounty to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord,
I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful ones.
O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your
serving girl.  You have loosed my bonds.  I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice and call on the name of the Lord.

I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people,
in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

Reflection Question:
What kind of ripple are you creating?
Who did something kind or good for you?
Who sees you as precious?

Prayer: Holy God, remind me how precious I am to you.  Create in me, through my words and actions, a rippling effect of goodness and kindness to my family, community and creation. Amen.
