I spent a bit of time looking for a book that Karen wants to use for the prayer service this Wednesday.  Unfortunately, I was not able to locate the book. Though, I did discover that she has a unique way of organizing her books.  Now in my search, I pulled out one book that caught my eye. It was titled “Anxiety Yields to Faith – Reflections on How Faith Helps Us Control Our Anxiety.” I thought this might be useful during this time of continued crisis.

So, I wondered back into my office and tossed the book on my desk knowing I’d get to that later.

A couple of hours past when I picked the book back up, but this time it was not the title that caught my eye but rather the author’s name – Dr. James D. Bailiff. Yes our own Dr. Jim Bailiff.  There is no doubt that there is wisdom for us to hear.  Jim writes “Anxiety has the power to produce not only an intense suspicion of other people, but of the rest of nature as well; particularly nature’s ravages against which we must protect ourselves at all cost… It is not difficult for us to see that anxiety has the power to dwarf our potential for greatness by producing in us a paranoia that blocks us from the very sources that can nurture us toward wholeness, namely our fellow human beings, the natural world, and God.”

If “anxiety has the power to dwarf our potential for greatness,” I wonder what empowers us toward greatness.

Scripture Reading: Psalm 23:1-3
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

Reflection Questions:
How is God guiding you?
Where is your calming water?
What is restorative to your soul?
What does righteousness look like these days?

Prayer: Holy God, nurture me toward wholeness and let me be great, great for your sake.  Let me tarry in the places of plenty and be still. Restore my soul so I’ll trust you more deeply to lead me on the path of righteousness. Amen.
