Prayer:Holy God, speak to all that keeps me from listening.  Speak to me an Advent message. I sit expectant to hear. Word of God, speak.  Amen.

Scripture Reading: Galatians 3:28-29
“There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.”

In 1983 Chevy Chase starred in the movie National Lampoon’s Vacation. It’s about the Griswold family’s cross-country drive to the Walley World theme park. On the way they make a stop at the Grand Canyon. (The link to the scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqNwo2NpmGY)
I’m not exactly proud but as I gazed into the sky last night to see the “Christmas star”, I admit that scene came into my consciousness. It was just a fuzzy light up in the sky. After a few minutes of gazing, I realized that not much more was going to happen. I didn’t do a Griswold and rush off as my instincts urged but I was tempted.  I think what made this occurrence spectacular (in a non-spectacular way) was the realization of the distance between Jupiter and Saturn. What looked ever so close was in fact two planets 456 million miles of space apart and yet from my view they looked as if they were merged together.
Reentering the house, I put myself in my thinking chair. The notion of merging together even when there is significant distance that separates became intriguing.  There is much that separates us these days.  No one can deny that there is plurality in our culture and world but why does the pluralization have to result in such polarization? The distance created among us comes from ideological uniformity, partisan antipathy, economic disparity and doctrinal constructs and sadly, all negatively affect our relationships and everyday life.  What makes for the possibility of merging 456 million miles of distance into something spectacular? What makes us see less of the separation and more of the connectivity?

Reflection Questions:
What did you think about the great conjunction of Jupiter
and Saturn meeting?
What other causes result in polarization?
How do you overcome polarization?
