It’s been said that “following Jesus isn’t about attaining a specific, measurable goal, or grasping a finite, literal truth. Following Jesus is about following.” It is about living with Christ present – actually in the here and now. We suggest that Christ-like living is about faithful movement. A third core value is journeying toward Christ-like living. Our journey of faithfulness is for a lifetime and it has a purpose. It takes us beyond memory, beyond understanding, beyond comfort, beyond control.  Faith is about a path toward, not a specific place on the road.

In journeying toward Christ-like living, we see new things as Jesus promised, we hear new words and reconsider old words. New companions will appear who tend to us and challenge us.

Perhaps journeying toward Christ-like living is more about days that haven’t happened, the people you haven’t met, the places you haven’t gone, and forgiveness that hasn’t been requested – at least not yet. To cling to the “hour you first believed” while telling yesterday’s story and polishing yesterday’s truth are never enough.
Our journey toward Christ-like living has a definite function and a defined outcome.  It is to live lives following Jesus who practiced hesed – who embodied mercy and kindness.  Christ-like living encompasses compassion and hospitality — humility and love.

Christ-like living sees others worthy of God’s goodness, concern and love.  As we focus on being Christ-like in our living, our eyes grow stronger, our vision clearer and our journey more faithful.

Scripture Reading:  1 Peter 3:8&9
Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love for one another, a tender heart, and a humble mind.  Do not repay evil for evil or abuse for abuse; but, on the contrary, repay with a blessing. It is for this that you were called—that you might inherit a blessing.

Reflection Questions:
How are you living more Christ-like?
Who’s the person in your life that has a tender heart?
What blessings are you inheriting?

Prayer: Holy God, today someone will need my faithfulness. Someone will need your light to shine for them. Let me not be hesitant to embody kindness and mercy nor let me be unconcerned to share the blessing of your love. Amen.
