I read a story about a time when Kentucky Fried Chicken was having a very difficult time with sales and their stock declined significantly. The Colonel called up the Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church and asked for a favor.  The Stated Clerk said: “What can I do?”  The Colonel replied, ‘I need you to change the prayer from, “Give us this day our daily bread, to Give us this day our daily chicken.’ If you do it, I’ll donate 10 million dollars to the Church.”
The Stated Clerk wisely replied he was sorry but the words of the Lord’s Prayer could not be changed.  The Colonel simple hung up
the phone.
After another month of dismal sales the Colonel called again.  “Listen, Mr. Stated Clerk, I really need your help. I’ll donate 50 million dollars if you change the words of the prayer from ‘Give us this day our daily bread, to “Give us this day our daily chicken.'” The Stated Clerk responded it was a very tempting offer and the church could do a lot of good with that much money, but again he have to decline; the words of the Lord’s Prayer could not be changed.
After two months more of terrible sales the Colonel got desperate. This is my final offer. If you change the words of the prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread, to Give us this day our daily chicken. I will donate 100 million dollars to the Church.” The Stated Clerk replied, “Let me get back to you.” So the next day, the Stated Clerk called together the General Assembly Council and said, “I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is KFC is going to donate 100 million dollars to the church. The council members rejoiced at this news.  Then one asked about the bad news. The Stated Clerk replied, “The bad news is we just lost the Wonder Bread account.”

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-20
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Reflection Questions:
What do you treasure?
What gift will you share today?
How are you practicing gratitude?

Prayer: Holy God, help me to keep doing the things that I have been taught about faithfulness.  Breathe on me and let gratitude be in my thoughts and actions. Amen.
