It’s Friday. Here you go… There once was a king who considered his daughter the most beautiful princess of all time.  When it was time for her to get married the king decided that no ordinary man should have her.  So he took the princess to an island and declared that any man who could swim across the dangerous river to the island could marry her and inherit the kingdom. On the day of the challenge the river banks were crowded with men eager to try for the prize.  The first guy jumped in but had only taken a few strokes when a shark grabbed him.  The next man didn’t get any further before a crocodile nabbed him, and as more and more men jumped in the water the creatures devoured them all.  After a while, nobody would jump in, and the king began to despair. But suddenly he saw a man in a three-piece suit swimming across the water, pursued by all the river’s inhabitants.  As he took stroke after stroke a shout of encouragement went up from the people on the beach and the king stated yelling, “You can do it.” The crocodiles, sharks and snakes did their best to catch him but he was too fast for them.  He finally crawled onto the island gasping for breath, his suit ruined. “Well done!” yelled the king but the man just continued gasping.  “You are going to marry my daughter,” yelled the king but the man just continued gasping.  “You will inherit my kingdom,” yelled the king but the man just kept gasping.  “Aren’t you happy? Say something,” shouted the king, “you have just acquired the greatest treasures!” With a deep breath the man looked up and said, “No king, I don’t want to marry your daughter and I don’t want your kingdom.”  He then turned to face the beach and said “But when I catch the guy who pushed me in this river…”

Scripture Reading: James 1:2-3
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Reflection Questions:
What is testing you these days?
What else does faith produces?
What brings you joy?

Prayer: Holy God, when I get pushed and pulled in too many directions remind me that faithful living is a daily choice I make and brings me great joy. Amen.
