Evening Reading from Paul Reiter, Justice Advocate

This past Monday evening over 175 persons gathered on a Zoom meeting as SURE (Sarasota United for Responsibility and Equity) heard reports and adopted areas of concern for this coming year.  Affordable Housing and Criminal Justice reform will be our emphasis. Affordable housing continues to be a problem for 42% of Sarasota households while 9 out of 10 top growing jobs don’t pay enough for someone to pay for the average rent of a one-bedroom apartment in our area. The Sarasota County Commission recently voted to remove affordable housing requirements on new developments, despite the worsening of the crisis. You can help by writing a letter to your county commissioner. (More details will be available). The second area of concern was criminal justice reform assisting adults with a civil citation program aiding persons whose misdemeanor arrests for things like driving without a license or petty theft. We are grateful that the state’s attorney office is continuing to work with us as a implement an adult civil citation program. Why do these things matter?
For the last two days we have been reflecting on Micah 6:8. The Lord requires us to DO justice, LOVE kindness, and WALK humbly with God.  All of these require us to take action.  Every one of these is introduced with a verb – DO, LOVE, WALK. I find that it is easy to do Kindness – I can give from my abundance to charities that do a world of good. It is a bit harder to Walk Humbly with God and always be mindful of how many blessings I have. But the hardest one for me is to DO justice. It requires effort. SURE is one way I have found that helps me be accountable.  Our Justice Ministry Team at Pine Shores would welcome you to this journey!

Scripture Reading:
“Do you know what I want? I want justice – oceans of it. I want fairness- rivers of it.  That’s what I want.  That’s all I want.”
(Amos 5:24 – The Message)

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is God inviting you to DO in this season of your life that will bring more justice into our community, our church, and our world?
  2. What is a small thing that you can do that will bring fairness into the world?
  3. How will you go about DOING justice in your everyday walk with Christ?

Loving God, help me to be an instrument of your justice, kindness, and to walk with humility. Enlighten my path with your grace so that I can be more like Jesus, in whose name we pray.  Amen.
